Client Spotlight: Yates & Yates, LLP

Client Spotlight: Catalina Home

We are pleased to highlight this quarter our client Catalina Home. 

Catalina Home was originally founded in 1978 as Catalina Carpet Mills, as a high-end nylon carpet manufacturer.  The company is still owned and operated by the original founders, and they have ventured into wool carpet, rugs, porcelain tile and hardwood flooring.

Client Spotlight: Powerstride Battery

logoWe are pleased this quarter to spotlight our client, Powerstride Battery.  Powerstride Battery is a California-based global distributor of batteries and battery-related products for the automotive, commercial, industrial, golf, RV, marine, telecommunications, and high technology markets. They distribute their products through their warehouses to retail customers, wholesale customers and through their internet store.

Rick Alvord purchased Powerstride Battery in 1995. At that time the company had eight small warehouses. They now have eleven sales divisions and nine warehouses located throughout California.

Powerstride’s growth has been due, in part, to the acquisition of several smaller companies during the past seventeen years. The company has also seen increased growth as a result of upgrading some of the services they offer. Rick indicated that they have grown their Palm Desert location by changing their focus from not only selling golf cart batteries but to building custom golf cars, selling new cars, servicing cars and selling reconditioned cars.

Powerstride’s sales have grown almost 4.5 times since Rick Alvord purchased the business in 1995. When asked the secret of his success, Rick stated that “God has blessed the business and we are thankful. I believe God owns all of this and so we are faithfully working each day to follow what he has called us to do.” Rick also indicated that they have a great leadership team and they work to empower the staff to do the best they can and encourage them to find ways to bring value to the company.

Client Spotlight: Greenlaw Partners

We are pleased this quarter to spotlight our client, Greenlaw Partners. Greenlaw Partners is an Irvine based real estate investment, management and development company. The company’s focus is acquiring and developing real estate in joint venture with a select group of institutions and individuals.

You may have seen articles about Greenlaw Partners in the business news these days due to their involvement in some high profile commercial real estate transactions, one of which is the popular entertainment center known as Triangle Square. As detailed recently in the Orange County Business Journal, in 2006 Greenlaw Partners assembled a group to purchase the center and now has big plans for its future. Along with other changes Triangle Square will now be known as “The Triangle”, this name change is the first of many ways that the landmark is trying to change its image. The most notable change that the plan will take will be the lack of retail stores. The center will try to focus on being a restaurant and entertainment center. The new designs include a 24 hour fitness sport, A bowling alley, and 17,000 more square feet of restaurant space.

Greenlaw has been acquiring and managing properties since 2003. It currently has over $230 million in transactions in the last 12 months and over $1.2 Billion since its inception. The company has over 40 professionals all with in depth and diverse experience.

We are proud of our relationship with Greenlaw Partners.  Through a strategic approach in partnership with Greenlaw personnel, we have assisted Greenlaw in providing timely, accurate tax reporting information to their many important partners.  Our focus is to leverage our real estate expertise to the services we provide Greenlaw so that they remain in compliance with the uniquely complicated tax rules applicable to real estate transactions, while at the same time taking full advantage of those provisions of the law that allow them and their partners to minimize taxes.

Client Spotlight: Black Diamond Builders

We are excited to once again highlight one of our clients, and are this time highlighting Black Diamond Builders.

Black Diamond Builders is a professional construction firm specializing in home and office remodeling, and was founded by J Steele who has been in the construction industry since 1986. He holds a general building contractor license and is a member of the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders), the local chapter of BIA (Building Institute of America) and the Remodelers Council. He holds 3 designations from the NAHB including: Certified Graduate Remodeler, Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, and Certified Green Professional. Only two other contractors in California have this combination of designations which are ideal for home improvements.

Black Diamond Builders is also actively involved in the community.  They have collaborated with a team of professionals that help people who are physically challenged to remain living at home longer and volunteered to build the playhouse seen below, donating the auction proceeds to help the local homeless through HomeAid.

Client Spotlight: Arctic Leasing & the Anema Family

Nienow & Tierney, LLP is excited to highlight our client Arctic Leasing and the Anema family.  The Anema family has been in the used truck sales business in Bellflower for over 60 years and operates under the name J & J Truck Sales, which is located off the 91 freeway in Bellflower. 

In recent years due to changes in government regulations, the sale of used trucks and trailers has slowed dramatically.  It was in 2007 that the family started an offshoot called Arctic Leasing with another business partner.   This business leases out refrigerated trailers to grocery or other retail stores and also has a freezer service division.  Trailer rentals run anywhere from a few days to a few years in duration with a high volume of rentals during the holiday months.  The business started in 2007 with four partners and $1,342 in revenues.  The company’s profits have steadily increased along with the number of trailers in service and service accounts, and as of December 2011 the company’s yearly revenues were around $777,000.  They also just opened up a second facility in Ontario which will accommodate outside truck/trailer parking as well.

We are excited to see the progress this company has made over the past few years and applaud them at finding an underserved niche in their industry.
